I will be doing a live performance of "Cleopatra and Isis" for REEL Poetry Festival on February 25, 2023!
I am wearing a recreation of Queen Cleopatra’s traditional headdress inspired by the goddess Isis. Cleopatra was Macedonian Greek by blood but Egyptian by heart. She saw herself as the incarnation of Isis. I am doing research and writing a historical poem with dance, music and video. The images of Cleopatra and Isis was taken from the walls of Dendera Temple, built by the Ptolemaic rulers in Ancient Egypt. More details on my performance will be coming soon. Visit REELPoetry Festival website to stay tuned for ticket information, dates and showtimes, program, and panels! All videos, talks, and panels will be subtitled and accessible for Deaf audiences! Hope to see you at DEAF MUSLIM EXPO! I did research on authentic Sufi / Islamic poetry and read a lot of books, so I made sure not to use fake, Pinterest-style English translations created by non-Muslims which are widely (sadly) prevalent online. My poetry show will have American Sign Language, video and English subtitles.
You can catch my solo poetry performance at DEAF MUSLIM EXPO this weekend! University of Illinois Chicago Student Center East 750 S. Halsted Street Chicago, IL 60607 OCTOBER 8, 2022 BUY TICKETS HERE Look forward to meeting some of you! Tickets can be purchased here!
I will perform on October 8 (Saturday evening). I will present a new show called جمال القمر Jamal Al-Qamar ("Beauty of the Moon") a sign-language poetry show with Islamic calligraphy. More info can be found at Deaf Muslim Expo! Thrilled to finally share another new videopoem with you all!
"Hymn to the Nile" was a sacred hymn from more than 4,000 years ago. The Nile River was deeply sacred and very important to the ancient Egyptian people. They prayed to various deities for blessings and for bountiful flooding from the Nile River. I DO NOT CLAIM TO BE AN EXPERT ON ANCIENT EGYPTIAN CULTURE. My video is NOT meant for educational purposes, it is for entertainment only! Ancient Egypt is one of my favorite topics to read and discuss, I have always been fascinated by the history. I took some liberty with English translation to make the first few lines of the hymn more clear and easier for both deaf and hearing audiences to understand and enjoy. ***Forthcoming PERFORMANCE at Deaf Muslim Expo in Chicago on October 8, 2022! Proud to say that my nonfiction piece has been published by Brown Girl Magazine and Mango & Marigold Press. The book is called Untold: Defining Moments of the Uprooted. The book features nonfiction pieces written by South Asian women (and identifying women) of diverse backgrounds, faiths, and upbringings, including Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, Sri Lankans, along with Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Buddhists, etc. and Indo-Caribbean diaspora from Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, etc. You may pre-order a copy here.
