SABINA ENGLAND : WHO AM I?
I am a fully deaf performer based in the Midwestern USA. I had originally started out as a filmmaker, video artist, and playwright back in my early 20s after I graduated from high school and university. I was born in Leeds, England and I was raised in an Indian Muslim family from Bihar, India. Sabina England is my stage name. To be clear, "Sabina" is my first real name, but "England" is a stage name to protect my privacy! I started calling myself "Sabina England" at 18 years old when I wrote and submitted my first stage play to a theatre company in London, UK and the play got accepted and performed!
I studied filmmaking at London Film Academy in London, England and I have a B.A in Theatre (with a focus on playwriting) from University of Missouri-Columbia. I wrote a few stage plays which were produced and performed in London, UK at Theatre Royal Stratford East, Soho Theatre, and Tristan Bates Theatre. I also wrote, directed and produced a short film called "Wedding Night" which had its world premiere at Tribeca Cinemas in New York City. From that point, I began creating poetry videos as well writing poetry, short stories and plays. A few of my pieces have been published in print over the years.
Ultimately, as I underwent my creative journey of about 20 years, I decided that I prefer performing so I transitioned to performing onstage from writing plays and directing short videos.
I have been fortunate and blessed to have my own solo shows at New York International Fringe Festival (performing, writing and directing my own solo show called "Allah Earth: The Cycle of Life"). In 2024, I had my one-woman comedy show called "Deaf Alien Babe Goes to Hollywood!" peformed in Washington D.C at Atlas Theater, produced by Visionaries of Creative Arts, assisted with funding from NEA.
I am what you would call a "variety" performer. I use sign language, dancing, mime, and burlesque in my performances. I am always doing something new for each show. I truly believe that the arts are very important and can bring people together despite massive cultural, religious and political differences. I love making people smile and I enjoy dazzling everyone with beauty, glamour, and laughter!
You may contact me if you are interested in booking me for a show or festival, any opportunity that would be a great experience for me to share my art with the audiences. Thank you for reading!
